Are Air Conditioning Filters Recyclable?

Once an air conditioning system has been installed it is generally advised that you change the filters every 3-6 months at most. While changing the filter keeps your system working perfectly, what do you do with the old one and are air conditioning filters recyclable?

The air conditioning industry continues to increase its focus on producing energy efficient air filtration technologies that are less harmful to the environment. The need for eco-friendly air filters that reduce health hazards are more important than ever before, and there are a number of new ranges being manufactured that will improve the way units perform.

HEPA filters in particular are rising in popularity due to their ability to dispose of harmful substances and toxins from the environment. This also includes things such as dust particles, pollens and pet dander.

Can you recycle an air conditioning filter?

This comes down to the type of air filter you have installed and the materials it is made from. In most cases HVAC filters are made from either fiberglass or polyester fibres which cannot be recycled. It also means the entire air filter has to be disposed of, which includes the cardboard frame – even though cardboard can usually be recycled.

Traditionally, the recycling of air conditioning filters has proved difficult as most are classed as hazardous waste by local authorities. The materials used in manufacturing typically means they have to be thrown away with the rest of your household waste.

Changing the filter by yourself should not affect your warranty either, so once it needs to be replaced try not to let the dust and dirt build-up become too heavy to avoid a potential breakdown.

Are there any eco-friendly air conditioning filters?

Thankfully there is a solution available. You can purchase reusable air conditioning filters instead of disposable filters. This will not only help the environment but also save you money in the long run as you will not need to continue buying replacements every 3-6 months.

It requires you to have a good maintenance schedule in place to ensure the filters are being cleaned regularly so they can maintain high performance levels. With this in mind, it is also a good idea to book in an annual servicing for your AC system (summer is usually the best time), which will enable a fully qualified engineer to check and clean the units and condenser.

One key thing to remember when washing a reusable air filter is that you must ensure it is fully dry before putting it back into the system. This is because actively using a wet air filter could create a breeding ground for bacteria.

How long do eco-friendly air conditioning filters last?

A reusable air conditioning filter could last for as long as 5 years, depending on size and usage levels and if they receive the right level of maintenance. The upfront cost will be higher than disposable filters but will eventually be a more economical option over time.
