How to troubleshoot your air conditioning unit

There’s nothing more frustrating than turning on your air conditioning unit on a hot day only for it not to work. While it can be a stressful experience, there are some things you can do before you get in touch with a qualified engineer to fix it. If you are having problems, here are some troubleshooting tips for your air conditioning unit.

Why isn’t my air conditioning turning on?

If you cannot generate any power to turn on your air conditioning unit it could be due to a few different things. Check the unit outside to see if the condenser is working and that the thermostat is set and everything is plugged in. Try lowering the thermostat 5-10 degrees to see if that has any effect. A quick check of the manual could solve the issue, especially if the thermostat is not set to cool.

Also check to see if a fuse in the plug has blown or a tripped circuit breaker is the reason for the loss of power. Lastly, if none of the above are the cause, the problem could be because of a frozen coil, or an issue with the compressor or motor, which would require an engineer to take a closer look.

My air conditioner is not cooling the air

You may have a blocked air condenser if the unit turns on and the thermostat is set to the correct position. Check the outside unit and remove any weeds or other debris that may be blocking the air circulation.

Check the filter to ensure it is clean and not clogged up restricting air flow. When this happens the evaporator coil can freeze and stop the unit from working. If you use the air conditioning unit on a regular basis, or have pets, you may need to keep a closer eye on the filter. When you cannot see through the filter then you can tell it needs cleaning.

How can I ensure my air conditioning unit doesn’t break down?

There is no sure fire way of avoiding a breakdown, as there can be any number of reasons that cause it. However, one of the best ways to reduce the likelihood of a breakdown and the cost of calling out an engineer is to look at a long-term maintenance package.

Having your air conditioning unit serviced on a regular basis will ensure potential problems can be spotted before they develop into something larger. It also means you maximise performance of the system so you get the cooling effect you expect every time you turn it on.
