If your air conditioner isn’t turning on there are a few checks that you can carry out. Check that the unit is plugged in, and that the thermostat is set as normal. Also inspect the unit outside to see if the condenser is running. Turn the thermostat to cool and lower the temperature by 5-10 degrees to see if that resolves the issue. Also read through the thermostat manual as small things can sometimes be overlooked. If it’s still not working, check for a blown fuse or tripped circuit. You may need professional assistance if the AC is still not turning on after checking all these things, as there may be an issue with the compressor or motor.
When an air conditioning unit is not blowing cool air, it could be due to a blocked or dirty condenser. If the thermostat is set correctly, check the condensing unit outside and remove any dirt or build up of debris that could be blocking circulation. You should also check that your filter is clean and that you do not need a replacement. If the filter is clogged, the evaporate coil doesn’t’ receive enough air and the coil freezes up. Houses with pets or homes that run their AC frequently will probably need to change their filer more often.
If the system is on, setup correctly and blowing out cool air, but it is not enough to cool your home, the system may not be big enough for your requirements. Before an air conditioning unit is installed it should be correctly sized to ensure it can provide enough cool air on the hottest days. This will allow it to maintain a 20–25-degree temperature difference between indoor and outdoor temperature. So, if it is 80 degrees outside, the system should be able to keep your home at a 60-55 degree temperate, if needed.
Your air conditioning unit is made up of five components: a compressor, evaporator coil, fan, condenser coil and the expansion device. There are also two parts that are installed inside and outside of your home. Any of those components can experience mechanical failure. For example, a broken fan prevents the outdoor unit from removing the heat. A damaged compressor affects the refrigerant as it can’t circulate between the external and internal units. It’s important to have your air conditioning system regularly serviced so any issues can be identified and fixed before they develop. In the long run it will save you money on costly repair bills and ensure the system lasts for longer.
