Will an air source heat pump save me money?

We are getting more enquiries from customers about air source heat pumps who want to know if installing the system will save them money. Here we explain more about the installation and running costs to help you decide if it is the best option for you

What are the installation costs for an air heat pump?

The cost of installing an air source heat pump varies depending on the size of the property. For example, for a 3-bedroom house and larger you will pay anywhere from £8,000 to £15,000. However, this is still cheaper than water source heat pumps that tend to cost a lot more to install. The installation price includes the cost of the pump, labour and a brand new hot water tank. The size of your current radiators also have to be taken into account, and whether or not they need to be replaced will influence the cost. Depending on the energy efficiency of your home, you may also have to improve the insulation. If so, this will add to the cost, so you may want to get an Energy Performance Certificate check carried out to see if it’s required.

Are there any grants available?

Recently, the government announced a new Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) that would provide up to £5,000 to households wishing to install energy pumps. Unfortunately, at this stage this is only available for solar water heating, biomass boilers and ground source heat pumps. While the grant will help reduce the installation costs of these systems, the long term running costs may not prove worth it.

How much does it cost to use air source heat pumps?

If you have an old oil-burning boiler, installing an air source heat pump should help to reduce your energy bills across the year. However, the long term costs of using an air source heat pump will come down to the insulation levels of your home. A poorly insulated property will struggle to retain the heat produced by an air pump and you could end up paying more compared to using a tradition boiler. But if you have a well insulated home, or you invest in improving the insulation levels, you should be able to save money on your energy bills. Properties that already have underfloor heating systems, or that are thinking of installing one, will definitely benefit from using an air source heat pump. And it’s also important to remember that air pumps are a zero carbon heating system, and are a much more eco-friendly option.
